My guest room needs some love. While I have most of the room already laid out in my mind, I still felt like something was missing. Just like most great ideas do, it hit me: MAKE A BENCH TO PUT AT THE FOOT OF THE BED! And even better, that same loud voice said, use the awesome midcentury pencil legs from that stool that you never use anymore! Next, of course, I would have to figure out the fabric situation. And since I am impulsive and refuse to wait for anything to arrive in the mail, and because Tulsa has a limited amount of decent modern fabrics, I decided to DIY some fabric of my own! All over Pinterest, you can find amazing inspiration for homemade stamps. I decided on simple triangles. Because I am a little obsessed at the moment.
I found this really soft, basic grey fabric on sale for $6 per yard. I bought 3 yards because I like having extra fabric to make pillows.
So what you will need to make the fabric for the bench:
1.) 1 to 2 yards of fabric, depending on your bench measurement
3.) Foam sheet
4.) Exacto Knife
5.) Paint & paintbrushes
I decided to do a little test run before I started stamping. Cut out a few swatches of fabric to practice on.
Once I decided which I liked best, it was time to get real! I cut the fabric to fit the 45inX12in (1 inch thickness) piece of wood I purchased at the hardware store. The nice gentleman who worked there cut the wood to the exact measurement I needed, so he saved me some time there. I allowed for plenty of space on the fabric to cover the bench – you can always cut excess fabric, but you can’t add it back on! I added about 10 inches on each side of extra fabric:
