Make: A Woven Plant Stand

July 14, 2014

untitled-6I am obsessed with house plants. So obsessed that at one point, I had about 25 in my house. HAD being the operative word. I am a bit of what you would call a black thumb. I can’t seem to keep them alive. Which is why I want to get better at taking care of them. My green thumb friend told me it’s all about the sunlight. She suggested moving them around and watching how they react – if they perk up or if their color improves in a certain spot, then you know that it where the plant will thrive best. So I decided to make my plants mobile for a while by making this rope-wrapped plant stand.

untitledAll you need is this plant stand on castors, which is really just a miniature dolly, and your favorite rope (or in my case, what was in the garage). I decided to do a God’s Eye weave since the plant stand is in the shape of a cross. I used to make these all the time when I was little so it was fun to take a trip down memory lane!

untitled-3I worked it from the underside – you want to make sure that the part of the wood that is wrapped with rope is underneath, as pictured. This way, the God’s Eye design in on the top of the stand.

untitled-10This design is tight enough to harness a little weight, making it a great surface area to hold your plant – even a large one.

untitled-27 untitled-39I feel like the weave design possibilities are endless with a project like this. I might do a little more research to make the next one.

I love it! The jute/twine + pine combo is great. 25 is a LOT of plants! I have a brown thumb I think–my plants seem to last about 2 years each, and after that I just can’t keep them going anymore.

Great idea with lovely results! What was your source for the wooden cross with casters that you began with, if I may ask?

Thank you Paul! I bought that at home depot – I don’t remember the section I found it in but they have them there for sure
